What is the A-Z Waste Management Act 1996 Course?

The Waste Management Act 1996 as amended is at the centre of everything we do regarding waste management.  This new course which was written in 2023 is designed to provide an overview of the whole Act.  Since 1996 the Act has provided the main waste management framework for the waste industry and it has been amended almost 30 times since it was first written.  This course begins by exploring the history and changes to the Waste Management Act and then progresses on to look at each of the seven parts of the Act in turn providing delegates with a clear overview of each of these parts.  At the end of the course delegates will be familiar with each of the sections in the Act and how they come together to form a strategic framework legal basis for the waste management industry.

Content

At the heart of almost everything to do with waste management you find the Waste Management Act.  It creates the foundations for waste collection, waste facilities hazardous waste, enforcement and inspection, producer responsibility and many other aspects of modern day waste management.  Very often people approach the Waste Management Act looking at a small section of it with the objective of understanding a small part of the fine detail of the Act.  We have a different view.  The Act should be regarded as a complete document and each section set in context so that the bigger picture is visible.  By doing this delegates develop a real understanding of the whole legal framework and can fill in the missing gaps as they continue to learn more about the detail.

This course is ideally suited to people who have a significant waste management role in a company or act as a regulator or as part of a compliance scheme team.   By late 2023 the entire Circular Economy and Misellaneous Provisions Act 2022 will be commenced and this will have a massive impact on the Waste Management Act.  These changes will be as profound as the POE Act in 2003, so we think many of our trainees will benefit from an update on all this.  We will set a date for this course in 2024 once all the changes to the Act have filtered through.   The course is accompanied by a manual and also a copy of the most up-to-date consolidated version of the Waste Management Act currently 1996 to 2022.
