What is the Waste Management Training Programme?

The waste management training programme has now been running for over 20 years since 1999.  It was originally developed in conjunction with the Department of the Environment, the EPA, the County Managers Association and FAS to meet the requirements for fit and proper person working on waste licenced facilities.  The programme has grown and changed throughout that period.  It has been providing training not only for waste licence facilities but also waste facility permitted sites.    It also provides essential training for all types of waste management professionals and in particular waste enforcement officers working in the EPA, local authorities, compliance schemes or other government bodies such as NTFSO.

Andrew Moag has been involved with this programme since its inception as he was the project manager who worked in 1999 developing the original programme.  Andrew has carried on through to present day delivering large amounts of this training and ensuring that the course is maintained  and delivered every year.   A number of the other trainers including Vip Patel and Billy Moore have also been involved with this course since its inception and continue to play a role in the delivery of the programme.

The waste management training programme is delivered as six modules over 12 days of training that can be taken within a three month period.  The course runs annually beginning in September and is normally completed before the first week of December.   The course can be taken together as six modules or used on a menu basis to select modules that have a particular interest for the delegate.  Some delegates begin in one year and then complete their training with the additional modules the following year.

Who is this course for?

A range of staff working on facilities or as regulators in the waste industry. We have been training staff for over 20 years and have developed a track record as the main provider of waste technical and legislative training in Ireland. During that time we have trained over 1000 people on the entire programme and 1900 delegates for Modules 1 and 2.

We run a series of other complimentary 1 day courses for waste collectors and facility managers or technicians. Although there are no formal entry requirements to do this programme those with some experience and professional education find the course more relevant to their work roles.

Course Delivery

All ETS training courses are provided with comprehensive courseware which includes a manual and any other supporting information that is required during the delivery of the training.  Manuals are maintained in up to date condition and are always relevant to of course that is being delivered.  The main programme manuals are updated each year and printed for that event.  Module 1 and 2 have additional legal reference resources including a copy of the ETS consolidated Waste Management Act that will be up to date at the time of issuing.   We design our training delivery so that it not only provides information with powerpoint slides but also comprises group work and individual exercises to allow delegates to get a deeper understanding of the courseware.  All our courses are delivered face to face and manuals are provided at the event to ensure every delegate has all of the information they need to have a positive high quality training experience with us.

Venues

We typically use a number of hotel venues with appropriate training suites to deliver our training.  We select venues that are as close as possible to the majority of delegates and we use venues in Tullamore and Dublin on a routine basis for many of our courses.  The main waste management training programme has always been delivered at Tullamore as it represents the most central point for all delegates.  Other courses are sometimes run in regional hubs where our delegates are drawn from that region.  As well as good quality training we believe that high quality hospitality is an important part of the overall delegate experience and so our courses come with regular refreshment breaks and lunch is provided in the hotel venues.   The cost of this hospitality is included in our training costs so there are no additional or hidden extras for delegates when they attend our events.

Assessment

The main waste management training programme is assessed and this provides you with an appropriate qualification when you complete an individual module or the entire course.  Assessment takes place on the second day of each module and comprises a short written test based on the information that has been provided during that module.   Due to the volume and complexity of information presented in Modules 1 and 2  the assessments that accompany these Modules are “open book” so delegates may refer to their reference material and legislation.  The remaining modules 3-6 are closed book assessments based on short multiple choice questions.

Certification

A Certificate will be issued to participants who successfully complete any module and the respective assessment.  If participants are taking more than one module a combined certificate will be issued when all the modules that are booked have been taken.
